I guess they'd be just fine that way. I think I'd prefer chunky.
Sorry for all the questions, am a complete novice with this cooking malarky! (does this count as cooking from scratch even though I've bought the sausages?).

I'd be inclined to call it cooking from scratch, yes
Though... if you really want to cook from scratch you'd need to follow the tip from Carl Sagan:-

I would cook the sausages first as you suggest, and add the things you mention, but also some oxo cubes to make a nice gravy. Thicken up the gravy with cornflour (or maybe use gravy granules instead of oxos and cornflour if that is what you have) before you put the pastry on top (I never bother with underneath pastry). It will only take 25 or 30 mins in the oven at about 200 degrees (or equivalent gas) if the sausages are cooked first, plus they will be nice and brown.

Well, I'm pleased to report a success! OH and I both liked it.
The only slightly dodgy bit was the apple. I cubed an apple (into 1cm chunks) which was fine. However, I think the apple was too old. It wasn't mouldy or anything like that, just a bit wizzened (sp?) and it didn't taste of anything when we ate it. You know how normally you get a sweet taste? Next time I think I'll try it with fresher apples!
Apart from that, I counted it as a success, especially as I made it bigger than two of us could eat, so there are now two portions in the freezer ready for another day.
Oooh, I think I'm becoming OS!!! :j0
