Phone line removal

Is there any particular requirement for our house to have the landline coming into it?
It comes from a pole across the street, but I don't want the line attached to my house, it isn't as if we'll ever use it.
Can I insist it's removed, or do it myself, or does it have to remain attached?
I understand the line wiring is BT's property so we must not damage it. But if it's detached neatly and left, say, wrapped round the pole across the street and not damaged, is that OK?
I'm suspecting there's some reason why not, but thought it worth a try.

It's not April 1st is it?
Everything up to and including the master socket is BT's property, if you were to detach or tamper with the line at the pole or even detach it at the master socket then you would find yourself on a criminal damage charge most likely.
What exactly is your objection to the line being attached? No free lunch, and no free laptop

My objection is that the house is a lovely old cottage with two lines coming into it from overhead neither of which are or will be used.
One terminates in an ugly black box stock to the house, then goes into some archaic GPO box then back out the window, round the house etc.
The other was severed by someone here before us by cutting the wire internally, so that line will never work anyway without an engineer visit, and it snags on the upstairs window every time I open it.
I'm not suggesting damaging anything, but removing the entire thing neatly right up to the socket (there is no formal master socket, or one recognisable as such) in one go as if it had never been there.
Then the question arises as to what to do with it since the other end will still be attached to the pole.0 -
And the house it is attached to is the OP's property. If BT don't remove it and the OP does, I agree he may possibly face a criminal damage charge. But that would not be because there is anything fundamentally criminal about removing BT's redundant assets from your property, it has more to do with what a screwed up country we live in.It's not April 1st is it?
