On High risk items new ebayers. Paypal hold the money until either you get positve feed back or 21 days is up. It will stop after a while. The quicker you post the quicker your money is released
Why might my payments be held?

PayPal will hold payments in transactions where the vast majority of seller fraud occurs. Here are the most common instances in which a payment may be held:
    • You have been on eBay less than six months and sell an item above £50
    • You have a feedback score of less than 98% and sell an item above £50
    • More than 5% of your transactions result in dissatisfied buyers*
    • You have an average Detailed Seller Rating (DSR) of 4.5 or less
    • You have received less than 20 Detailed Seller Ratings
    • You are listing your item in a higher-risk category
PayPal will not hold payments for eBay items if you meet the following criteria:

    • You have been an eBay member for more than 6-months, and
    • Your total Feedback score is greater than 100, and
    • Fewer than 5% of your transactions result in dissatisfied buyers*
    Or
    • Your average DSR is greater than 4.5, and
    • Your have received more than 20 DSRs in the last 12 months
    • Your buyer dissatisfaction percentage is less than 5%
What will happen if my payment is held?

If you receive a payment that is held by PayPal, the amounts held will show as “Pending” in a separate PayPal balance on your account page. You will still have access to all other funds in your PayPal account.
Your funds will immediately be released when one of the following occurs:
    • The buyer leaves you positive feedback
    • 21 days pass without a dispute, claim, chargeback, or reversal filed on the transaction.
If you receive a dispute, claim, chargeback, or reversal on the transaction subject to the hold, PayPal may hold the payment in your Account until the matter is resolved, even if the claim, chargeback or reversal is made after the hold is released.
I am a new seller, will my payment be held?

If you are a new seller and have a record of good performance, you will receive your payment instantly in the vast majority of cases.

One of my newer accounts gets a warning about the hold every time I list in certain categories, even if I list at 99p. Does no one else get that warning before they list? If not why have they picked on my account as it happens if I list via turbo litser (where the warning comes up before it allows me to list) and if I list direct on ebay.

As it happens even on a sucessful sale my funds have never been retained which is odd.

Yep, it was every time on our newest private account. I guess it goes away when the criteria has been met. It's easy to not spot or realise what it means I suppose, otherwise there wouldn't be so many baffled people turning up here.
This is my opinion. There are many others like it but this is mine

I am a professional ebay seller. I work hard at my job, I love my job, if you think it's silly that's your problem not mine. :p

I had this pop up every time I listed something when I first started out. In the case of the OP, I think this time it's a sensible thing that Paypal are holding the money until people receive their goods. A brand new seller with nearly £1700 in payments could sound suspect. Not that I'm saying that of the OP, just that some of Paypal's rules are there to try to protect people using eBay. And as a business seller number1kitty might be subject to a closer look, like I say, I was when I first started, even though my items are definitely lower value (unfortunately!).

Thank you for reassuring me that I am not being singled out by ebay, I was getting a bit paranoid there for a while! That particular account has almost 300 feedback but is 'new' compared to my others so I am probably seen potentially as a problem still in some categories.

So No1Kitty take heart you are not alone!

Maybe you should have looked at the T&Cs earlier. Then at least you could have been prepared.

Going from selling nothing to £1700 in 2 weeks is going to trigger some questions. Yes you are high risk, you are a newish seller who has gone from barely nothing to £1700 in two weeks. The £1700 limit could have been sorted well bofore you got there. Paypal does give out warnings before you get there

As for the hold on money. That is to give buyers more confidence and help avoid fraud. If your business needs the funds that quickly you either need to look at your business model or maybe ebay isnt the right place for you to sell. If you keep selling at the rate you are selling it wont be long before the holds are removed.

You really should have done a little more research before you started out then someone of these problems could have been easily foreseen.

Thats nothing to what I actually take!

If it's not that much money to you, then walk away from eBay and Paypal. It doesn't suit your business model, then you could always stop using it. (It's not the water company, you do have a choice). I wouldn't get so bothered about it. I'm not having a go at you here, but just try to remember it's a business you're running, it's not you that they're personally having a pop at, and it'll be sorted in time. We all have awkward parts to our jobs, and it's just that - part of the job. Paypal can be confusing, and yes annoying at times, but learning to just go with it, can give you an easy life!

Hope you're eBay sales continue to do as well as they have in the past two weeks.
