Hi there everyone in Oxford - I noticed the MK thread has done very well and wondered if anyone has anything to say about Saving and Spending in Oxford - its an expensive place to live, eat and socialise so any savings would be gratefully received!
There is a little shop in Kidlington called the Everything Shop that apparently has many people from all over Oxford coming to buy in bulk (although it is not a cash and carry)
Lots of places to go to with the kids for free,
Did everyone know public swimming baths are free to children within the Oxford ring road. Saving for me with three kids!
Hope the thread goes well as first time set up a new thread!!

PS For the swimming you do not need to live in Oxford either! I travel past my public pool for 1 mile to go to the pool just inside the ring road!!! (I think that is a saving)Debt - the river in egypt De-nile!0

When I lived in Oxford we used to make regular trips to the McArthur Glen Outlet Village in Swindon. Only takes about 50 mins from Oxford in the car - straight down the A420.April Grocery Challenge £81/£1200

hi, i live in abingdon..but its a real dump. just one massive housing estate and nothing really for people to do.
so we usually go to didcot for shopping swimming etc.
but love the museums in oxford.
especially the pitt rivers and the science museum...and they are free too.
lots of nice parks in oxford like cuttleslow(they have a mini railway in the summer for approx 30p a ride!!).
granted abingdon does have nice river walks.....but facilities like shops, swimming etc.
only pool we have is mainly for sport not for fun..no flumes wave machines etc...
so may as well go to oxford from now if its free..yayyyy
bicester outlet village is not too far either..can get some bargains too..0 -
Hi, this is my first post on this site.

I am a student at Oxford Brookes. If you willing to look you can find some real bargains in Oxford. I live on the Headington/Cowley border. Most people if they go shopping go straight to the City Centre, but shops here are far more expensive than the Headington & Cowley local shops. I don't tend to go down to the city centre that much anymore.
However there is now a Primark in the city centre in Westgate which is good.
In Headington shops on London Road there are two shops which are good for all sorts of things.. they have almost everything! One is called A - Z and the other is Clovers which is just around the corner in Windmill road. Also there is a stationary shop called Pen to Paper which gives a discount for students.
Another area I like to go to get stuff cheaply is Cowley Centre. This is situated at the very end of Cowley Road, on a road called Between Towns road. There is a shopping precinct there called Templars Square that has all that you need! It has one of my favourite shops for getting bargains.. called Savers. Last time I went there I got 2 packs of facial wipes for £1.39 and some vitamins for 79p. If you are willing to buy generic unknown brands you can save a lot, they are just as good as the brand name products. This shop does all sorts as well so it is really good. Also in the same shopping centre there is Wilkinson which has some great bargains too. There are a lot of shops which I like to call "cheap shops" in this area, which I like. Open to 6pm everyday I think.
If I can think of anything else I'll tell you.

If you're like me and not too mechanically minded, The Bike Doctor, is cheapest and they sell reconditioned bikes. They have a workshop on Magdalen Road but they are in Brookes and Oxford Uni once a week.0

sorry if I am telling granny to suck eggs but do you all know about the following:
"Oxford for the Under 8s" -great book for families kids with pages on free days out. Costs about £5.00 but of course free from libraries.....see also the related website http://www.communigate.co.uk/oxford/newparentnetwork/
https://www.dailyinfo.co.uk: this website lists loads of events in and around Oxford loads of which are free
and saving the best for last: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OxfordFreecycle/ : this is part of the worldwide freecycle phenomenon that I just discovered a few weeks ago. "The Oxford Freecycle (TM) Network is open to all in the local area who would prefer to recycle to others, rather than throw away unwanted items such as unloved bicycles, pianos , fax machines etc."
if you join this group (you need to sign up with yahoo mail) then it lists loads of free stuff that people want rid of. It can be anything from garden sheds to modems to moses baskets and is usually not rubbish and hey if you're not paying for it who cares. I have given stuff away on it :A and I've never met a freecycler I didn't like! My one tip would be to open a yahoo mail address specifically for this as there are loads of emails per day (generous lot in Oxford)-suck it and see. I'd love to hear if anyone gets what they are looking for on it....
great thread btw0 -
Katiev007 I have been freecycling in Oxford for about 6 months now and have received many things we were looking for including a bed and a fridge freezer.
Savers also have shops in Kidlington and Banbury,Fashion on a ration 2025 0/66 coupons spent
79.5 coupons rolled over 4/75.5 coupons spent - using for secondhand purchases
One income, home educating family0 -
Can anyone help? I have some old clothes which are too tatty for Oxfam and the like. A friend told me that some places recycle clothes (I'm not sure what for) and it would be better rather than throwing them in the bin.0
-
yes, if you go to tesco either abingdon or oxford cowley. the salvation army have clothing recycling bins. where apparently unusable clothes are recycled in to new cloth!!!
hope this helps.
