    Vaguest question ever award!

Still cameras with good video recording include the Canon EOS 500D and 5D, however these are £600 and £2500 respectively (with kit lenses). Still the focusing and speed of change for video are still lacking in comparison with a dedicated camcorder, however their still shot performance is top notch. They are also bulky as they are DSLR cameras, not compacts.

A good stills camera (be it a little point and shoot compact like a Canon Ixus or a mid range bridge camera) take excellent stills, but video which is ok for occasional use, but if you want video all the time, don't buy a stills camera.

A good video camera doesn't, in general ever, take good stills.

    Different technologies.

Horses for courses. If I don't need super quality I just use my mobile phone. That does both with reasonable results. Otherwise I have both camcorder and stills camera.
Good stills can be extracted from video through software.

I recently got a FujiFilm FinePix 2000HD. Its a 'bridge' camera. Its a surprisingly powerful 15x optical zoom, 10 mega pixel unit. Its not going to impress the inevitable camera aristocracy but its considerably better than any compact I have used. Better still, it can also take full high definition video clips up to 15 minutes in length, the number of which is only limited by the amount/size of memory card you want to feed it. Unusually the zoom lens is active in movie mode like a regular camcorder.

I got it as a proper Fuji factory refurbished item, in absolutely as new condition for a paltry £115.
  • thanks for the award ive been looking at the panasonic tz7 would that be a good compact to get

IMHO tape still beats anything else as it records in avi. Also this is the best format to edit. My camcord is a mini dv Samsung. The new HD camcords are a pain to edit as some suites can't import the files.
