• I got one of these emails. Exactly as you describe. Thought it suspicious because of the bank details asked for in the attachment. Did a google search for J170 refund and came across the moneysavingexpert forum. Thank goodness I did. Needless to say I will not be going any further with this.

it is a PHISHING SCAM. read this information on HMRC website, clearly saying that they will never send notifications of a tax rebate by email, or ask you to disclose personal or payment information by email.

    hmrc.gov.uk/security/phishing-emails.htm

forward the email to this address, as mentioned on the HMRC website: phishing (AT) hmrc.gsi.gov.uk

  • A spam email from fraudsters purporting to be from HM Revenue and Customs offering a tax rebate is currently doing the rounds.

Got an email this morning to Dear applicant, saying I had a £144 rebate luckly the link didn't work but talking to HMRC they say its a scam and the link usually asks for bank details.

    BE WARNED

Just wanted to report that this scam is still going strong. I got the email yesterday, and almost fell for it. I filled out the bank and CC details after which I was taken to the HMRC site. There I had difficulties; my password was not accepted even after being reset twice. So I phoned them. And in the recorded message I heard the scam warning for the first time, and knew...

Now I am worried. I did fill out my CC details can they now have access to my bank?
