I got this email too a few months ago saying I was due a refund of about £190. Knew it was a con from the start but rang HMRC anyway to confirm and sent them a copy of the email.
I always hover my mouse over links in dodgy looking emails like this to see the address it will take me to if I were to open it.English by birth. GEORDIE by the grace of God.0 -
I have recieved this, however I knew it was fake. The spelling was terrible, and the email address was a Yahoo one. Alarm bells were ringing... as it looked very suspicious
I just deleted it.:j Things can only get Better :j0 -
Thank you Guy...was due a rebate...very nearly opened it, but as it was with other scams/fakes/hoax's, didn;t.0

I had this email a few weeks back and was a little suspicious. Went onto HMRC website and the email was quite cnvincing logo wise etc. Forwarded the email to HMRC as requested but didn't hear anything else.
ps Through this website, I got £600.00 cheque back of Tax people a few months back re Working Family Tax Credirts from a few years back!!
Thanks Martin - :A0 -

I received one of these too.Looked very convincing but I went directly to HMRC website to check it out and then like LindaR I forwarded it to them.Think the amount in mine was £485 and some pennies.Probably because it doesn't say you're due to get back a vast amount some folk will be taken in by it.0

The OP says this thread is to discuss the news story.....?0

I received one of these years ago. The scary thing was they had the exact amount on it that I was waiting to receive (by post).
I reckon there is an insider sending the emails.0 -
I got one today, i'd heard about the scam though and it went straight in my spam box. I'll be happy if the HRMC really do owe me as much as it says though! :j
ETA - oops just seen at the top this thread is to discuss the news story, not the actual emails. Sowwy
 Think happy & you'll be happy

I got one this morning all links point to the genuine hm websites. The catch is in the htlm form attached. This asks for your address and credit card details to be refunded to and also a password. When you click on the submit information button it sends your data to apostolicsingles.net (full link not attached dont want anyone getting scammed) which runs a script. I dont know what the script does but suspect it then forwards it somewhere else to the real con artists. The apostolicsingles site has probably been hacked by someone who is using it to hide their activities.
The contents of the email where:
