probably sounds like a daft question but I've had two answers that conflict so ........................
can a car be driven without car tax from a trader to the local dvla office...................
it can't be taxed at a post office or online as it needs to have a change from disabled to ordinary tax class

I'd say no.
As you're using a public road0 -
give them a ring as i know you can drive it to a mot centre as long as it is booked in.0

I'd say you should contact the police the local DVLA office and ask them. If they give the OK, and I think they will, ask for the name of the person who's OKed it and ask them to take a note of your conversation so you have a defence if a camera or traffic car gets you.
You would have to drive straight there though, even stopping for a paper is a no-no.0 -
Ask the trader to include a new Tax disc as part of the deal.
Why does it *need* to go to the DVLA office anyway? I don't see the need, they're not going to come out (of the office) and inspect it are they.0 -
No - just take the documents down to the office and then once it's all sorted, collect the new car.0

I've just re-read the original post, I'd thought it was the other way round.
I now say it's not your problem. It's up to the dealer to make sure the car has the correct paperwork. Whether it's the car or the paperwork that needs to go let the dealer deal with it. If it had a bald tyre the dealer would have to fix it so they should fix this too.0 -
It depends who takes it, Traf. If the dealer takes it on his trade plates (the red and white plates you sometime see temporarily attached) then he is exempt tax. If you take it yourself it's a no. Why do you need to take it to the DVLA office? If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0

Thanks everyone for your help, just to clarify,we found a great car, hubby fully inspected it etc etc.................but the dealer was a bit of a numpty,we needed the car sharpish and the nit didn't tell us until the last minute that the car had been registered for disbled tax .................so the classification needed to be changed before taxing
anyway the idea was pick the car up from the other side of bristol and bring it to where we live...........tax office is a few streets away, thus saving us getting it taxed then having to go back to collect it
we did just that today, didn't want to take the risk as police said 'you should be ok but strictly speaking your breaking the law'
car is now taxed /reclassified and in hands of grateful son:D
thanks all for your help
