I have been given £1000. By a family member.
I have no loans or credit cards.
Im thinking of putting it in savings or ISA

I disagree with The Grinch, as ISA's are paying so poorly at the moment if you're a BR taxpayer you can do better with savings and drip feeding the money into a regular savings account. Plus you have until March 2010 to use up this years ISA allowance.
Given that interest rates ARE so low at the moment, my advice would be to go blow the lot on something you've always really wanted! If you want to be a true money saver then take out a 0% purchase credit card, buy the goods on that and put the same amount into a saver (similar to stoozing),.. and after 9 months you may have earnt the grand total of enough for a couple of cups of coffee at starbucks!0
