I hope this is a simple one...
Bought the Nec ND 3500 DVD writer... set it up, set to master, in windows xp etc... will READ cd's and dvd's but will not BURN. I have tried Nero, Easy CD, and another program, i forget the name, but it says something about Power Calibration error after about 5%, ie at the end of the TOC write... I had no problems with my previous cd drive using the same software, same discs, same set up so can anyone help me end my frustration and become another satisfied consumer?!
I hope so.. :-/

I recommend you visit the NEC forum at https://www.cdfreaks.com
Power calibration error = usually
1) Disks are not suitable for attempted burn speed.
2) Laser lens is dirty.
3) Laser diode is dead.
4) Some versions of Nero will give this error if you are booktyping the DVD+R(W)
I suspect the first reason.
The above forum will help you and theres some modified firmwares to improve performance with certain disks.Hug provider for depression thread :grouphug:

If this is the case, as it may well be as i have burned 3 dvd's successfully and failed 2 using the same dvd brand... and failed with all my datasafe cdr's... then i think this drive is not so flexible as my old LG cd writer which would take anything i put in it.. shame that... BUT, if anyone with the same drive can tell me what discs they use successfully and perhaps where they buy them, then i can save some money buying my cd/dvd media! cheers 8)0

Read the forum at the above link. There's loads of 3500A users there including people who can modify the firmware to improve results on certain discs.
It's the dye which is more important with than the brand....
Use DVDInfoPro to check the dye type on the disc.
http://www.dvdinfopro.com/
DVDInfoPro will allow you to change the booktype on DVD+R(W) discs to DVD-ROM for greater compatibility.
I've only got a NEC2500A which uses a different chipset (the NEC3500A uses the same chips as the Pioneer A/108A)Hug provider for depression thread :grouphug:

So what media do you use, i'm trying to work out the best price etc but if someone with this drive can tell me what works well for them then that will save me money and then if i find it cheaper i can post where etc..0

recently got one myself , got it in an external usb2 housing.
Flashed the firmware to remove lock soon as i got it , currently using ritek dye based 4x dvds and datasafe princo cdrs without a fault.
