working in term time..

i am thinking about changing my hours when i go back to work and just working in term time, someone said that when the chiuldren are on school holidays , the half term weeks and the 2 weeks at easter and xmas make no difference to tax credits. (as they class it as normal holiday entitlement)
but i only have to infrom them of the 6 weeks holiday as they will then class me as unemployed, is this correct ??

I work term time and on tax credits. My pay is spread equally over the year so I am paid when I am off for the 6 weeks.

i have been approached about a term time job with no pay in the summer... does that mean i'd be classed as unemployed?

You wouldn't be 'unemployed', you might be on leave - but not unemployed unless they fire you/you quit/get laid off, and then rehired after the summer. I too work term time (now off till September 7th wahoo!) but my 36 weeks of pay is spread out over the 12 months for purposes of pay. Although I am not working, I am definitely not 'unemployed' though.

i thought that if i am off 6 weeks holiday as school holidays i would still be classed as employed, but tax credits said no.
in the 6 weeks holidays you dont work, so they class you as unemployed, even though i have got a job......

this is exactly the same as me , no pay in the 6 weeks holidays, they say its classed as unemployed
  • Perhaps it depends on whom you talk to? My husband works in a school and is term time only, but tax credits just say that he works an average of 30+ per week. I know that he wouldn't be able to sign on during that period as his normal pattern of work would be to have the six weeks off so technically he is not unemployed. They have said exactly the same for me but that I work an average of 16 hrs per week.
PS I hope all term time only workers have a lovely summer holiday-one more day to go for me......!
