EBAY or POST OFFICE help needed

Hi
I need advice please. Myson sold his PSP on ebay and I posted it for him last Monday recorded delivery, my bag was stolen that day, along with everything in it. I never gave the recorded delivery slip a minutes thought, as been sorting out cards, keys the works as you can imagine.
However the buyer contacted my son this morning to say he hasn't received the item and wants a full refund? I dont have the receipt and the post office said they cant help. Does anyone have any ideas how to get round this.
My son is 15 and has obviously long since spent his money he made from selling it as it was for xbox games and I can't afford to repay it either. I am not even entirely sure the guy hasnt got the item!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have 100% feedback on over 100 items and have never had any trouble before though I'm sure planty others have
thanks

i assume when you paid for the recorded delivery they gave you a receipt? showing what you spent to post the item, the house no. and post code of the recipient and the bar code of the recorded delivery item? (i know this is what you lost but just making sure this is what you had in the first place)

if so phone the royal mail helpline and they should be able to access the ref number from their database as you can tell them date and rough time you went in to the post office, post code and house no. you posted to etc. there should be no reason why they can't give you the tracking ref then you can track it online to see if it has been delivered or not
