Virgin overcharging international access numbers

VM have overcharged my international calls using access numbers. I've been in contact with them and they say they can add a charge. Is this right? I phone US for 1p per min plus the small connection charge which is only a few pence. VM are now saying they are charging me nearly 3p per min.

If you look on the cheap call providers sites your normally see 1p is only from a BT Line. Other providers can charge more and VM have done so for a while now.

The small connection charge you refer to is 8p.

Consider using http://www.18185.co.uk/mobilerates.php via their 0808 freephone no. 4p connection and 1p aminute and you dont pay if your not connected unlike 0844 gateway numbers.

They could charge 50p/min, you don't have to take their service.

If I make a call that I know is going to be short such as

"I am leaving now I will be there in 10 Mins"

I get charged 13p on my Virginmedia landline.

I only get charged 8p on my Asda mobile so I use that instead.

Use 18185 via their cable access freephone number and it will cost 6p.:D

Yes, they could charge £5 p/min, but they should be consistent. Most months they charge 1p, then occasionally they charge 8p/min, then they refund me with an apology, then we go back to 1p/min for a while for a while, then they increase again.

It's difficult to keep track of your bill if they chop and change eh?

I agree that can be difficult.

When I had a Virgin Media phone I knew that any number beginning 08 (but not 080 obviously) was going to be expensive compared to anyone else so used to find alternatives, such as 18185 mentioned above.

Only BT is required by its licence to charge the standard rates for 0844/0871 numbers etc. Other providers can (and do) charge what they like.

That's the BT monopoly for you!
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
