Your work *should* give you the time to go to the sessions. Most places do, unless you got a really stingy boss. I go in my lunch break coz my boss is one of them stingy ones.
I think most people have to take time off to go to the doctors and dentists these days. I commute to work so I do often end up taking a whole day if I have a dentists' appointment. I don't know many people who work for companies who allow people to nip out to appointments.
A lot of people wouldn't be able to get out in work time because of the nature of their job. I staff a desk and am the only professional where I work so I can't just nip off for an hour and there is no blood donation place within walking distance of my work so I couldn't go in my lunch hour.
I'm hoping to move to another area of the country this year so hopefully I will be able to give blood then!0 -
i started when i was old enough (cant remember how old), used to go with my dear departed dad..... just given my 49th donation (yesterday)
had to swap arms for the first time, due to a build of scar tissue from previous donations (but thats just me - i scar easily)
i am now 40 and my target is 100......... which i should manage by retirement age..
so well done to all who given (whether it is recent or in the past) and to those who have thought about donating........ go take it a step further......
my 16 yo daughter wants, but will have to wait until she is 17
B- (blood type, not mark for spelling :P)smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

I have given 5 now. Started going when my dad was diagonosed with Lung cancer back in 2004.
I am always fine after donation but I have very deep set veins so they always struggle.
Last time the nurse hit an artery so I ended up with the biggest bruise on my arm! Spoke to NHS direct who advised that I donate from the other arm next time. I have taken a photo to show the nurse when I next donate. It won't put me off though - ever.
I too am on the bone marrow registerIt's nice to be nutty but's more important to be nice0 -
Hi All
Have donated since I was 19 - started at Uni, have had to stop a couple of times, having had operations, bad accident - nearly had a transfusion been refused and then told I couldn't donate more due to this then cleared everything and was allowed to re-start again. Done around 20 now.
My brother started whilst he was at uni too but I don't know if he still does. Mum had to have a transfusion when my brother was born and was lucky enough not to need more when she had cancer last year but yes it makes you feel like you've helped in a roundabout way.
I think I'm an O type, but having had a shoulder op they couldn't find a vein in my arm since so have had to change arm for the last few years. So normally land up looking at wall whilst nurses have to change the bed around all the time
For anyone not done it and thinking of doing it please do, you never know if you / your family will need it one day and then you'll be pleased you did then.0 -
Hi everyone, I gave an armful on Friday evening. There wasn't too much of a queue but it is infuriating having to wait. Think I'll get an appointment next time. I noticed one lady reading her book whilst donating. Now that is laid back!
Go on, give it a go!

Got upgraded from a red card to a blue donor card yesterday! Always worth booking if you can but I turn up and see if there is a queue!
Never really had a problem with donating except my first time. Since then it's been quick and virtually painless.Tim0 -
I'm a regular donar and I last donated yesterday, mmm biscuits.
If the time and location they ask you to give is inconvienent then as previously suggested check out other times and locations on the website or give them a ring. There will usually be a time that's OK.something missing0 -
hi all, i donate, have done since i was 19, next appontment is in june. I am quite lucky as my 'local' hospital has a blood centre within it so i can book there on a regular basis without waiting for them to come around to the local youth centres :j it cost nothing and you are doing something good
