BT don't like me very much...

I'm hoping someone here can give me a little advice?

Due to some serious problems a little while ago, I couldn't pay the phone bill - high debt and it wasn't as much a priority as rent and electricity. They cut the line off to only accept incoming calls which I didn't actually mind too much. I called them and explained the problem (outgoing calls were automatically routed to them) and they said they could give me 45 days - which I thought I could do.

Then about 2 weeks later another bill (4th one since we joined them in April) with a second lot of line rental charges. So all in all they are expecting me to pay 8months (well two quarters)worth of line rental having been with them 3 months. This is the first time I've lived on my own so I have no idea if they can do that? The is also some 'unitemised' calls (on an itemised bill) totalling about £50, and there was confusion as I had originally asked for monthly paper billing which they said they could do, but apparently can't, thats where the trouble started - and now even incoming calls have been barred and I can't even call BT to talk to them about it. Last week I got a letter saying it was a termination notice, so got online straight away and sent them an e-mail.

My mum lent me a good chunk of the bill (enough to cover about half of it) to pay which I did, and then e-mailed them explaining I had paid that at the post office and would they consider not terminating the line just yet and offered them a payment plan which they could set up via direct debit if they wanted to (which we can afford now my other half found a job last week and would get the bill cleared in 6weeks max). I haven't heard anything back from them, can't call them, so I'm now stuck. I've sent them another email tonight explaining again and saying that as of tomorrow when they are due to disconnect it completely, I will have no way of getting in touch with them to negotiate payments anyway.

Is there anything I can do? My mobile company would charge me a fortune for dialling an 0800 number? I've only got a couple of pounds credit left!

call the 0800 number free from a phone box..
  • I would if I could lol. There isn't one around here (live in a village) and during the day I would have to take my daughter with me, and being nearly 2yrs old I don't think she would take very well to standing in a phone box lol. Will try and get someone to stay with her tonight for a while and go for a drive... honestly hadn't thought of that.

You can also use this work around for calling freephone numbers.

Better still you can call BT direct on 01793 590308 if calling from abroad or a mobile.
  • I managed it thanks to your help guys, and as they are very busy requested a ring back. We shall see where I stand soon.

Does anyone know if I can ask BT to allow incoming calls again once I have paid a certain amount? I really want to avoid termination due to the fee's for reconnection which would just make the situtaion worse.
