Virgin to BT transfer - still being carged

Bit of advice please.

I saw the deal on here for a free bt line and jumped at the offer. I then saw on the bt website 'It's Easy to Switch' You don't need to contact your current provider – we'll do it for you. So I followed the process and got the line installed with my old virgin number being transfered over to bt. All this happened back on the 18th May and I thought that would be the end of things with Virgin.

Today I have recieved a bill from virgin. I checked the virgin line and its dead no ring tone or anything so called them up and they are claiming that bt haven't told them of the change and I've argued that they have as how come my number has moved to them and the line is dead. All they said I could do is contact BT as they need to inform them. I then called bt and got told that they had told them and I need to speak to them.

I can see myself going back and forth for days trying to sort this out - I'm pretty sure that its virgin at fault - what the next step I should take??

Surely BT must have told them to get your number ported.

What is your Virgin bill actually for? If you are still within your contract term with them then you will have to pay an early termination fee.

Thats what I'm thinking as the number is working on the bt line and there is no dial tone on the virgin line. I've argued twice with virgin asking how can you charge me for a line that has no dial tone and is unusable. For there to be no dial tone they must've been told something, but they keep saying go back to bt.

Any ideas of where to go next, any higher up numbers to ring for virgin other than the muppets I keep get hold of? I'm tempted to just cancel the direct debit, but I don't want to risk my credit rating!

Well what does it say on the bill?
If you are still in contract, you can work out what the termination fee would be-it's your monthly fee times the months remaining.
