Need ideas to stop cats getting out of open windows...?

Does anyone have any ideas how we can have our windows open but prevent our two cats (both just over a year old) from getting out of them?

Last summer we had the kitchen window (first floor) open a tiny bit to try and get some air in. Mac pushed it open when we weren’t looking, walked along the outside window sill and jumped down onto next doors conservatory - we spent ages looking for her inside until we realised what she'd done.

We especially do not want them to get out of the windows on the second floor or the front of the first floor but we are starting to boil and the only remedy is using fans - must cost a fortune…? Occasionally when it’s been really warm, we have opened the front room window but it’s a huge panic to shut it as soon as they notice.

We had a catflap installed about two months ago - we keep them in at night but the rest of the time they are free to come and go as they please.

I had the cataire screens in my old house and can highly recommend them, the mesh really is unobtrusive and you hardly notice them at all. I was worried that the velcro method of securing the frames wouldn't be strong enough but it really was heavy duty stuff so no determined paw poking would pull them off.

My two were kittens when I first got the screens so they did tend to climb the (fibreglass) mesh which resulted in a few pinprick holes as they got bigger/heavier but now they're older I don't think they'd be interested in trying to climb up anymore. If your cat is a regular climber then the aluminium mesh is recommended as it's stronger but I think for the majority of cats the fibreglass mesh would be just fine.
  • Thanks everyone. Have had a quick look at the site and will probably be making a purchase or two!

Are they quite simple to put together?

They are fairly simple to put together, if you are competent at basic DIY then you'll be fine. I struggle to even put a nail in the wall so got a friend to make mine up and she said it was fairly easy!

There's a section on their website that shows pics of one being put together http://www.cataire.co.uk/index.php?area=content&page=assembly
