Greasy marks on clothes?

You can try "lifting" out grease stains on dry clothes by ironing with some brown paper (parcel paper). The brown paper "lifts" the grease out of the fabric.
NB: Not manilla envelopes - brown parcel paper.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

How much soda crystals would I have to put in?
I brought a beautiful skirt from Monsoon to wear at a wedding yesterday, and I've noticed a grease stain on it from the reception.
The skirt can't be dry cleaned or soaked, but can be washed at 40 degrees. It's purple and 100% cotton.
Would a bit of washing up liquid on the skirt, and soda crystals in with the powder work?
UPDATE: I just rubbed a bit of washing up liquid on the stain. It worked!0
