PC help with windows update

Please please help.I've updated my PC (XP) at long last with SP2 and it's all gone wrong. Skype won't work, IE7 won't install, can't get into hotmail or MS update as it's just a blank screen. Please please help.

Can you boot up into a Windows desktop?
Do you receive any messages, errors or notifications at any point? If so, what do they say exactly?0 -
Is it SP2 or 3? If it's SP2 then my gut instinct is to say disable the Windows firewall to check if it then works. SP2 enabled the Windows firewall IIRC.0
