ALG help

Hiya All,

I'm about to start the Access to HE course at college in September but just had a question about the adult learning grant.

When I apply, do they base it on the previous year's income even though at the time I'm going to be in college, we will have no where near that coming in?

My hubby & I both earn roughly the same but will be about £200 over the max threshold for the minimum £10. He earns just over 15k and myself have been earning just over 14k. (although my P60 said i was just over 15k due to a bonus I had but dont even remember seeing lol)

By going to college, we will be having his wage coming in & i have secured a weekend job which will earn about £60 a week. I'm hoping the tax credits will go up (yet another job on my list) at least a bit - then we can eat at least!

Think there are going to be a few adjustments to be made by both of us and tbh i'm absolutely terrified! Fear of the unknown & all that lol.

Anyway, if anyone has any clues or ideas, that would help - fantastic.

Thanks

Donna

  • The assessment is based on your 08/09 combined household income. However, if your predicted income for 2009/10 will have dropped by at least 15%, you can be asked to be reassessed on this basis.

Complete the application form and put your 2008/09 tax year income on and then include a covering letter asking to be reassessed on your predicted income for 2009/10. You will need to work out what your income is likely to be and if you can provide proof, you should do so (e.g. if you have indicated a lower amount for tax credit purposes for 2009/10 and this is on your TCAN).

Don't forget your college should be able to help you with this process.

    Thank you!

my wage will be dropping from just over 14k to about 3.2k! Quite a big drop! Will be a huge adjustment required. My hubby earns just over 15k.

I'll have to speak to college when I go to enrol.

    Thanks again
