Hi
Just wondered if it's possible to have a basic bank account (with debit card) after having a debt relief order
Natwest said it was fine to keep the basic account, as long as no debt was with them (this was a branch manager)
Is this the case?

If i was you i would apply to either co-op or barclays(as long as no debt with these)justin case, as Nat west are not known to be the friendliest of banks where debt is concerned, certainly as far as bc is concerned anyway!.DxFree impartial debt advice available from: National Debtline - Tel: 0808 808 4000 | The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) - Tel: 0800 138 1111 | Find your local Citizens Advice Bureau

If you dont include your current bank in any debts stated on the DRO, you will more than likely be able to continue banking as usual.
Having said that, be aware of the associations of banks (ie Natwest and RBS), and remember that they are perfectly within their rights to take money from your account if you owe them money.....regardless of your financial situation.
If you have any debts associated with your bank included on the DRO, my advice would be to open a new account elsewhere.I used to be Snow White, but I drifted.Mae West

I had a dro NOT WITH THE BANK,I thought things were going ok then totally out of the blue I get a phone call followed 24 hours later by a letter stating that I can no longer be with them, that is after 15 years of being a loyal first direct customer and never having overdrawn and in that 15 years I have had 2 £500 loans both paid back within just a few months .I had a visa card hardly ever used and had my wages paid in as well and an isa plus I have had savings accounts with them.Anyway I am now with another bank who couldnt believe how I had been treated and suggested I put it on this forum ,I am also taking this up with the banking ombudsman,This whole episode has knocked me for six,by the way the dro was only taken after seriously thinking hard about it and consulting CAB ,The reason for the dro was because I was being threatened all the while by a debt management company and could no longer take it as it was affecting my health ,anyway after 15 years of loyal service THE FIRST DIRECT can go to hell.0

thanks for that ,went to santander who couldnt give a dam about my dro and welcomed me with open arms, thanks for your suggestion though.visa card ,savings isa you name it they gave me it,what amazed me is that I also have an hsbc account and when I asked if I could use them they said yes .I felt I had to contact first direct again and ask them why it was that the bank that owns first direct wouldnt mind if I transfered my accounts to them, they had no answer ,I have since cancelled my hsbc account because I just cannot be bothered to argue with this bunch of total morons.:T0
