Bad Credit Rating from a store card

Dear all,

I was wondering if someone might be able to help me on this.

About 10 years ago I took out a credit store card. I'd bought a couple of things on it and then paid it off and closed the account. Or so I thought.

I had moved house from where the card was registered - a couple of times actually as I was at uni at the time. A few years later I had tried to get credit for something and was refused. What had happened was that there was insurance on the the store card (which I hadn't been told about) which re-activated after a couple of years - I would have had to have 'opted-out' of the insurance as well. The insurance was charged to my store card account so it magically opened back up again.

I therefore appeared to be constantly defaulting on payments as I had no idea this was going on. I eventually sorted it out with the store card provider after being tracked down by a debt recovery agent. However, my credit rating is badly affected by the episode - I have about 2 years of 'Not Updated', defaults and late payments on the account.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to how I can sort this account out so it clears my credit rating?

It's very frustrating as the rest of my rating criteria are fine.

Many Thanks!

  • The only option you have is either you sort out the issue with the credit card provider or you ask for some legal help. You are not the first to be cheated like this, this happens to most of the first timers.

I take it you've checked your credit reports with Experian, Equifax and Callcredit to see what's actually on there now. (For help, see page 1 of the *How to obtain credit reports* sticky)

In general a default shows on a credit reference file for 6 years from the date of the default.

If you opened the card account 10 years ago and some two years later acquired a two-year history of defaults, this negative data should have dropped off your credit files or, if not, must be about to disappear from view very shortly.
People who don't know their rights, don't actually have those rights.
