1st trip to Prague coming up

We have just returned from Prague and loved it, everything said about the food & beer is true. Sightseeing is excellent too, and the river is indeed very high at present.
My tip is to get a 3-day bus/tram/metro pass at the DPP kiosk in the arrivals hall at the airport. It is 220Kr, and will cover all transport for 72hrs from when you validate it on the bus. It includes travel on the airport buses. Get the 119 bus which will take you to Dejvicka metro, and then the train to wherever you are staying. The ticket even includes the funicular at Petrin.
Use the trams as well as the metro. They all connect, and you soon get the hang of the layout on the trams. Once your ticket is validated, you don't need to show it again as there are no barriers, just have it with you in case you are asked for it.
A good restaurant at very reasonable cost: Rodinny, at Nerudova 18 in Mala Strana. You will have a great time, enjoy.0 -
An important tip which I forgot to mention earlier on. If you buy normal tickets for public transport, they are valid from a limited time from when you validate them (there's a machine where they're stamped, then I think they're valid 60 or 90 mins depending on the time of the day). Allegedly the police can be quite harsh and were 'picking on' tourists who (a) hadn't validated their tickets properly; or (b) didn't realise the time limits differed according to peak/off-peak time. We had no problems, but the other hotel guest approached us on a few occasions to let us know. Then again, maybe he was just a bit of a weirdo!

I've been to Prague twice and am going again in August. Its wonderful. It is really easy to get around on foot as the city is pretty compact and quite flat (apart from the Castle area). I agree with other posters' comments regarding food and beer, just avoid the obvious tourist trap type restaurants and you will eat and drink very well for very little.
Have a fantastic time. This space has been intentionally left blank0 -
We had a really nice meal at the Kolkovna restaurant (see here for menu). We found the found to be very wholesome with generous portions, and relatively cheap - we paid under £25 for four of us (3 starters, 4 main courses, 4 desserts, drink) and that included a 10% tip! I think 100 Kc are about £2.40, so that'll give you an idea of what you get for your money.0
