How do I set up wireless broadband?

:oHi,

I am trying to figure out how to set up wireless internet securely in my house? I'm on Tiscali broadband and at the moment we have 2 laptops in the house (Family use + sons for Uni) but at the moment we can only use them when they are physically linked to the internet(lounge). Both have WiFi and I purchased what I thought was a wireless router from E-Bay but so far we can't figure how how to set the thing up? Any foolproof help accepted!:o

Can you post the router make and model no, (ebay link) even.
Usually you have to connect to the router home page and enter your tiscali email address and password, while connected to the router via the network cable. Alan.

depending on the make of the router you should be able to log onto it with your browser.
    Try 192.168.1.1 for the address.
If you give the make ,someone will know if it isnt that.
You plug your router into the modem using an ethernet cable .
Once you are into settings, find security and set it up as wpa 2 so you are secure.
Put a password in and write it down so you can get you computers to use the same password when they log into it ,else they wont be able to access it.
You can change the name of the connection to one you remember and write it down as the computers need to know the name too .
Windows has a wifi thing that lets you find the connections and choose the right one to log into.

You could do a lot worse than follow the step by step instructions from Microsoft. Just Google "4 steps to set up your home wireless network" (sorry, I can't post the link).

:oHi, I've managed to get the wireless router working but it's coming up as unsecured wireless network? and under the little yellow star I've got manual which the others don't have on the list. Sorry if I'm coming across as stupid but I'm terrified of doing something wrong and mucking up my laptop! Oh by the way I disconnected the wireless and plugged back into my landline to send this.

The wireless router is a Sky Netgear one :o:o

Please can you post the exact Netgear model number, which should be on the base of the router or the box.
To secure it you need to log into the router interface via your web browser, wireless section, and set up WPA security. Then you eneter that encrption key on your laptop to make the connection. This should all be in the instructions that Sky/Netgear will have provided to you.
You can't harm your laptop setting up a wireless connection.
