Honest MOT/Test Centre in Edinburgh Area?

Hi everyone,

Got a banger in need of an MOT, probably only worth about 350 quid itself so not looking for a centre thats gonna rip me off. I would use the council but the problem is that I can't get the tyres replaced before the test date due to incredibly low funds, therefore needing to do it somewhere that will replace the tyres for me at the same time, something i know it'll fail on. I understand that it's legal to drive the car to the test centre after the MOT date providing that it's taxed and insured.

I really am phobic of being ripped off as had negative experiences previously (haven't we all?), any tips or recommendations would be very greatly appreciated.

I have been on the good garage scheme website but a tad sceptical as all the garages seem to have 97 percent + ratings? Bit too good to be true methinks.

Ta much!

Andy

Have you read the Cheap mot article?
There are lots of tips there and links to discussions by area... e.g. Scotland.
  • I have yes but the Scotland thread is empty, no discussion

    Ooops... sorry about that.

Perhaps that is where this discussion should be.

I was going to recommend Corstorphine MOT Centre, which is where I used to go, but they don't do tyres. There is a tyre place next door so you could get the tyres put on there first and then take it for an MOT.
  • I used to use turnhouse garage at west craigs industrial estate on the road to the cargo terminal at the airport

What part of Edinburgh are you in? I've just started using a garage in East Edinburgh that my neighbour recommended and my car passed its MOT on Monday with no work required. That has never happened to me in around 10 years of owning cars so I'll be using them regular now!

Re the tyres why not pop into a tyre centre on the way to get the MOT? I used Farmers recently after comparing prices online and I reckon they will be a good bit cheaper than private garages.
  • I'm very close to the turnhouse garage so might consider that. I don't mind going across town to get the car MOT'd so east Edinburgh could be an option.

Do you reckon it would be fine to pop into Farmers to get the tyres done on the way to the MOT centre even though the certificate may have expired a few days before? Or can the drive only be directly to the test center? Might be a silly question but you never know with all the legalities surrounding this.

Thanks for the tips so far, great help!

Legally you probably should not do a stop off at Farmers on the way. Personally I would probably risk it myself but its your call.

Re the garage in East Edinburgh, if you drop me a PM and I will give you the address and phone no.

    Cheers
