Charlotte potatos

Has anyone grown these ? We had some among a variety of three (Vivaldi and Red Duke of York are the others).
There were 5 tubers of each planted containers.

Charlotte was the variety we felt were ready to eat (OH knows bit more that me ) and we're disappointed that we've only had 4 dinners from them and some of them were really small.

Just wondered if anyone else had grown these and had problems

Hi Mary. We've got Charlottes and having a good harvest from them, although the first we dug up were very small, so I am just taking what I need every other day. I've noticed that the spuds are getting bigger each time I pick them. Don't know whether its my taste buds, but I am finding them a bit bland.

I found that the Charlottes I planted in containers were extremely small, maybe the containers were not big enough, while those I planted in a raised bed have been successful. I used compost for both.

I've never grown Charlotte potatoes, but I do love to eat them! When you say small, how small? I buy them because they're so tiny, whole one in one mouthful type size. Is the size something to do with the variety?? Apologies if I'm talking complete nonsense, as I said, my experience is limited to eating them!

Janey - we don't have enough garden to grow them in the ground so all the veg is in containers. The Charlottes were part of an offer where we got three containers and the three different varieties. They've got smaller and smaller as the weeks gone on to the point of being 'bite size'...........pop in the mouth and theyre gone. No more left in the container and it did seem strange as the leaves were huge.

Cazza - the ones OH gathered today were really tiny, smaller than cherry tomatos. Nice to eat but I thought they were a bit bland

Thanks for your replies............always interesting to know how others get on with the same veg

I grow Charlottes every year. All of my lot love them.

I grow mine in pots and sacks every year. I never grow them in the ground because I like the way they come out so clean from compost.

They're a salad potato, so you should be giving them around 10-16 weeks before cropping them. The longer you leave them, the bigger they get. I harvest the bulk of mine when the leaves start to turn yellow, and the stems start falling over.

I'd recommend chipping the larger ones (delicious) and roasting the smaller ones whole (again...delicious). In fact...I rarely have them boiled now.

I have been disappointed with my Charlottes this year. The yield has been ok. About 2lbs from 5 seed potatoes in a sack. BUt they haven't tasted of much.

However I also had some International Kidney and they have been amazing. Planted the same way and averaging 3lbs per 5 seed potatoes. They actually taste of something

I bought the same set of 3 but mine are planted in the ground. I've only dug up one plants worth, got about 10 nice size potatoes but I have to say from the 3 the Vivaldis have tasted best, especially when done as wedges.

OH just pulled up the Vivaldi potatos -began to think there were no potatos there..........halfway down the veg. bag before he got any and managed to find 5 !
Very disappointing. OH did it all by the book and as plants they were very leafy and growing so well -we really thought we were in for a good crop.
And to think last year we got a lovely crop just from some supermarket potatos that had gone to seed !
