Hi, we flew to Antigua last year and got a good deal thru a Daily Mail offer, of all things. When waiting to check in we talked about paying the extra for Prem Econ (£199 each, each way) when a really helpful Virigin Staff member told us that if available you can buy an emergency exit seat for £50 each, each way. Not Prem Econ service but we welcomed the extra leg room. It was a god send on an 8 hour flight and the food and drink on Virgin Econ is free anyway!
I'd get there early and pay the £50 for an emergency exit seat for a flight all the way to LAX!0 -
For information about Virgin and trying to get an upgrade with them see:

However I should say, the only sure fire, cast iron, 100% guarantee way of getting an upgrade is PAY FOR IT."An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind" - Mahatma Gandhi0 -
If memory serves me correct, Virgin to L.A. is an Airbus, not a 747, and the premium economy on the airbus is a joke, honest, I have experienced it!!! Better to pay the £75 extra for an exit seat, and don't worry if the one next to it has the sticking out bulge, nice place to rest your feet, and Virgin don't charge for it.The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.0

According to V-Flyer the LAX route is a mix of Airbus's and 747's."An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind" - Mahatma Gandhi0 -
As a frequesnt flyer I have to aggree with the other comments that the only way you can be sure is to pay. I am a frequent flyer with BA and have only managed an upgrade twice - once becaus ethey lost my bags, and the second time becaus ethe flight was oversold. BA's frequesnt flyer programme does state that if they give out upgrades (and they only do if they have to, like oversold flight) then priority is given to members dependant of level of membership. BA's policy is that they will ram every seat in economy full and leave business empty if if the seats havent sold. On a plus side though IMO the service with BA is better than Virgin, and BA's premium economy is better to. I have flown Virgin premium economy and wasnt very impressed, although the fantastic Airbus aircraft are great0
