Garage conversion in a garage that's not internal..

We have a town house and the garage runs under the house, to get to it we have to go outside and open via the drive.
We are looking into trying to possibly convert into another room and have some as storage so the front is still openable as a garage door, the back as another room. We were thinking that the entrance to it could go via the lounge and have a set of stairs but not sure now if it is above it or not and need to get someone round to look into it. Who do we get, building reg people, a builder, specialist garage conversion people!..
Anyone done it to a garage like this?
Thanks for any replies.

Hiya, I recall a friends parents had done something similar when I was younger and had a spiral staircase going down from one room to another. Might be an options. It is a long time ago though so perhaps not much help.

Bear in mind, even with a spiral staircase, the amount of space this will take in both lounge and new room. You should consult a builder first to see it will be a viable project. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

Hi thanks for the replies..i can envisage where it would go etc, spiral were my first thought but actually i have gone off that idea and they are bigger i think than normal stairs..
I weill get a builder in i think and see from there! thanks0 -
spiral staircases take up twice the amount of roof of a standard staircase0

Look in the yellow pages or yelll.com under 'G' for garage conversion for the firms that specialise in this sort of work.0
