British Gas emailing me re: Online Account??
Comments
-
Hi privateryan
My name’s Vaishali and I work in the online team here at British Gas.
We have set you up with an online account using the email address you provided when you became a customer. You just need to click on the link and activate your account. Once activated you are ready to start managing your British Gas accounts online.
Your account is completely safe, and when you click on the link we will ask you for your surname and postcode. Once we have found your account you’ll be asked to set your secure password.
If for any reason you don’t want an online account you can ignore the email, however, we think you’ll like the benefits of being an online customer, check out this video on You-Tube -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqrF6NVoYuY
Hope this helps

Is anyone aware of BG asking their customers to acivate their 'online account' by clicking a link??
I've received a couple of emails about it now... and it smells "Phishy" to me? (by the way, I've deleted text from the links in case they are dodgy). The first email I got from them had spelling and grammer mistakes... which just struck me as really odd...
It just suprises me that BG are *emailing* me about doing important stuff to do with my account?? If they are... I think a complaint should wing their way.

I've just received a similar email asking me to complete my registration for my online account by simply clicking on a link. The strange is that I don't even use BG for my gas /electricity so I was just wondering a) how they got hold of my email address and b) why BG thinks it necessary for me to activate an online account that I won't need or use???????
Anyone have any idea as to what BG are playing at????0 -

They're probably trying to make everyone aware of the availability of online accounts/paperless billing. It will, after all, reduce paper usage and billing costs so have an environmental and financial benefit. If you decide to go back to paper bills, your online account remains active.
Cardew - I had a problem where I started getting paper bills again. On investigating, it was a processing error when I changed tariff, and has now been fixed.0 -
Further to the above, I too received an email inviting me to activate my account and suggesting my online account was ready to view.
Not a customer of BG and not inclined to accept the kind offer to click on the link to activate.0 -
I too received this email. I'm not a domestic customer with British Gas but have got a homecare agreement. When I tried logging in their system didnt recognise me.

The new BG computer system only cost £500 million, you can hardly expect it to function correctly for that pittance!0 -
I've had similar emails and although I am a British Gas customer, I'm pretty sure that I have never given them my email address. I'm certainly not happy with them having acquired it from somewhere in order to contact me. I would complain if I had any confidence that I would get hold of anyone who would do anything about it but since their customer services is apparently reading this, maybe they will take note? The fact that they are sending out unsolicited emails which look quite like phishing ones do not give me confidence in them as an organisation...0

I was just checking whether the BG emails I was getting were phishing ones or not and came across this thread as a result. I do not have an account with BG and they should not have my email address.
The latest email begins "Even though we have emailed you a number of times recently, you still haven't activated your online account." I dislike the tone of this, and I resent being sent emails from a company I have no contract with wanting me to validate an online account which I do not have!
If this is a genuine email and not a phishy one, then BG should beware. This will put people off trading with them!0 -
Why would it not be a 'phishy' one? What email address do they use?
Just about every bank in UK and the USA email me regularly.0 -
Cardew - what about the Nigerian "bankers" ???:rotfl::rotfl:0
