Strange problem with ford galaxy (56 reg)

I'm after some advice please. Our new (to us anyway) Ford Galaxy has developed a strange problem a few months after we bought it. Although all the indicator bulbs work (as the hazard warning lights work when you put them on) sometimes when you indicate nothing happens - i.e. the indicators dont work. this is an intermitent fault as sometimes they do work - sometimes only one side works and sometimes neither side works!
It has been taken back to the garage we bought it from who have said that they cannot find a fault - they have just tried the indicators a few times and sods law, they are currently working... They want me to pick the car back up - but I want them to sort the fault out.
does anyone know if this is a common fault and if it is something to do with the indicator stalk itself? Also, is there some sort of easy test someone could do to find the problem?

I would suspect, as you do, it's the indicator switch/stalk that is causing the fault.
Unfortunately, as with most intermittent faults, if you can't demonstrate it to a mechanic (or the mechanic can reproduce it) then it will be very difficult to pin down."Now to trolling as a concept. ....
