Obtaining store cards?

in Credit cards
Hi all,
I've never had a store card, have stayed away from them for the obvious extortionate interest rates, however I'm trying to establish some credit on my report.
At the moment, my credit score is 311 (equifax). The concern according to the report is the electoral roll (will be 3 yrs in Oct) and my only credit history is my current T-Mobile contract, which has been open for 5 months but is fully up to date and never late.
Other than that, my report is fine and nothing else is on there.
I'm frustrated that I can't seem to get credit - not because I want to spend on credit cards, but because I'm a student and could really do with a student account, but have been turned down back in May (when my score was 204) for Co-Op & Halifax (with whom I have a easycash account).
I've read that store cards are good for credit reports, and easy to open should your credit not be perfect - I don't want one to spend on, merely to have as another means of 'credit' so as my score goes up and the chances of opening a student account are made greater.
Any advice on my predicament?
