OK, mine was just opinion. I know they have cut staff...that is true. Whether that's affected the TVs is just opinion, I should've made that clearer.

I think youll find the majority of electronics manufacturers have either cut staff or cut wages by short time working or whatever
Thats more to do with theres not the same demand as there used to be, and of course the credit crunch

  • Hi, for that price and specification I would definitely go for it.

Do your parents really need a 1080p TV, do they have a PS3 or Blueray player and sit really close to the screen ?

If they watch normal TV mainly then the picture is generally worse on a 1080p set, you may be better going for a normal LCD and save money too.

I just want to them to get something they will be pleased with to watch antiques roadshow etc..... they are going to Currys and 'Comet tomorrow just to look at different makes etc..they have promised me they won`t buy from there, just get some ideas.
So all suggestions would be great.

Let them know that NO tvs are setup correctly (Meaning what might look cr*p in the shop but could look awesome once setup correcttly) in either of those places and the staff are absolutely clueless
My personal suggestion is buy a Sony, Samsung or Panasonic (Id go for a panasonic at the cheaper end of the scale as they tend to have better 'scalers' in them which means that freeview etc will look better)

    Thanks all,
aliEnRIK, you`ve helped me out many time before... when you say cheaper end of the scale I`m not sure what you mean and what `type of specs` they should be looking at. They are in their 70`s! I am not that old yet but (still have an old style telly!!!) and don`t understand what all the specs mean.

    Thanks

Anything under 700 quid is pretty cheap for a 37" tv. You can easily spend thousands (Though it gets a bit silly after 1.5k or so as your paying for very little improvements)

Specs ~ generally absolute rubbish. As theyre only interested in SD (Standard Definiton. ie NOT HD), then a good 'scaler' is the most important thing by a mile (A scaler takes the picture and 'enlarges' it to fit the screen properly)
HD READY is fine (Probably better than a FULL 1080 screen as the scalers tend to work better on HD than SD from what ive seen)
Contrast Ratios are absolute garbage ~ dont bother with them
100Hz etc ~ dont worry about it
Make sure it has at least 2 * HDMI sockets in case they need to upgrade at some point
Make sure it has the correct number of connections on for what they have now (HDMI or SCART for their dvd player say, etc)

Personally if I was to buy a 37" tv and scaling was the most important thing id buy this Pioneer ~

Its considered to be the best 37" tv in the world for scaling SD content

If theyre not prepared to go that high then id go for any of the Panasonic Plasmas ~
    THIS ONE
    or
    THIS CHEAPER ONE
