Paying off balance

I was wondering whether credit card companies ever negotiate a settlement figure to pay off an account or are they strict about paying it all off in full.
We owe quite a large amount and may be in a postion in the near future to be able to settle most of it - has anyone successfully done this?

If you've not been experiencing problems paying / missing payments then there is no reason they will accept any discount.0
