Fixing a light to plasterboard ceiling

Good afternoon all.

I've got two light fittings to install to a plasterboard ceiling and I wanted opinions.

I've located a joist on one of the fittings to screw into and on the other I have fixed a piece of wood between two joists to go into.

However, what is the best way to get the woodscrew through the ceiling board (which has a skim of plaster on). Naturally I don't want to crack the ceiling.

There seem to be 3 options that come up when googling:-

- Driving the screw straight through into the wood.
- Punch a hole through plasterboard with nail or gouge.
- Drill a hole through the plasterboard.

What does everyone think?

Just screw them in, afterwards you will wonder why you worried about it.

You can just screw straight through the plasterboard, but for a neater finish it's best to drill a smallish pilot hole through first. You don't need to use too much pressure - hardly any at all, in fact. Then just screw through the hole and into the wood.
