I've taken this all on board guys and realise what a total mess our life is...

Your life ISN'T a total mess! I think you just need to work out a budget - with some harsh priorities like making your kids stand on their own more - and stick with that. Put off plans for "property development" until you can afford it - and you can't today!

I don't think you are doing your kids any favours (although you obviously care enormously for them) by molly-coddling them... they MUST learn to stand on their own AND learn some realities about money. I think they will grow up thinking that whatever they want will always be there... and in five years time they'll be posting their SOA on here with a plea for help!

Good luck... they feedback you've had in this thread seems harsh... but most of it seems reasonable to me...

if you are debt free why are you here??

Hang on... I'm debt-free but am here! Am I not allowed to be? I think many of the DBWs get benefit from the advice of those who aren't in debt!

I didn't know it was a forum only for those in debt ;)

apologies, thats not what I meant at all and the comment was aimed at the poster not everybody else, I understand that people on here who are debt free come on and give great advice but my point was if the poster was debt free don't come on and slate those who aren;t and call them idiots.
  • tesuhoha - I''m glad to read that your daughter is getting a part time job but in all honesty she could be working full time over the summer (exams finish in May and most uni's don't start back until October!) so she should be able to get some money together - she will also be able to apply for a variety of financial aid packages she just needs to speak to someone in her student finance centre to see what is available to her.

I understand you want to ensure she is getting a good education but I work 40 plus a week, keep a home and I am in my final year of a degree which has taken me four years (only one year extra than a full timer!) and I am set to graduate with an easy 2.1 :T and to top it off I get no financial assistance as I'm working!!

There is no excuse - don't believe her when she says it's to much with a job - try walking in a part time students shoes and then tell me it's hard

The hardest person to tell the truth to, is oneself. People have posted diverse opinions in response to your request. Receive them to clarify your thoughts and develop a strategy for managing your financial affairs. Don't waste your energy or cloud your thinking by getting into conflict with posters in an attempt to defend your position. Don't make kneejerk decisions in response to suggestions.

If you have begun to have discussions with OH, first review your values and beliefs in life, together. You have stated some of them them in your posts on this thread. What have you achieved so far?

Where do you want to go? What to you need to do to get there? Although it might be painful, read the thread again and then just put your ideas on paper as you think of them. The wrong side of an old roll of wallpaper is good for this.

Take each idea in turn, eg 'renting accommodation' draw a bubble around it; write the consequences of the action in their individual bubbles and link up the bubbles to the original idea. Do this with all the ideas, staying put, moving to the new house etc. Hopefully this will help you to see what effect each action would have on your finances and what changes you need to make to reach your chosen goals.

    Best wishes bh

I am very appreciative of your advice. It was just that I was insulted and called names, names that I probably call myself, but dont appreciate being called when I come on here for non-judgemental advice.

My daughter is now planning a PT job during term and then FT over the summer as she did last year. She was unable to claim any financial aid with fees etc because our income is too high. Dont think they take debts into account, do they? If they do, then I will suggest it to her but im reluctant for her to take on any more debt as i know what a struggle it is.
