Rent prices in Cardiff

We're trying to gauge the average price of a reasonable one-bedroom flat in Cardiff (or within easy commuting distance of it, but preferably central). So far I seem to be getting the impression that you aren't going to find much under £450 per month that isn't either ridiculously small - which was fine for us when we first got to the UK, but as we're planning on spending at least five years in Cardiff we'd like something that we can sort of feel at home in - or geared towards students/flatsharing.
Is this a reasonable estimate, or am I just looking in the wrong places?

That sounds really cheap. I've friends who were looking in Pencoed (2 junctions away on the M4) and the places around £450 were not very nice.

I thought you'd already got somewhere as you said in another post that you're moving down here next month. I'm confused now!0 -

There seem to be a lot of places empty at the moment in central Cardiff, and I'm hearing that people are quite successful in negotiating down the advertised price.
I didn't end up taking it in the end, but I did find a VERY nice studio flat bang on St Mary's Street for £300pcm. I know that's not what you're after, but I would expect you to get something half-decent for £450 perhaps in Riverside or Roath..?Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -
There are a few flats in Roath, Splott (CF24 area), and even Cardiff Bay (although these will probably be fairly small) that you can rent for £450/£475 a month, and as the previous poster mentioned, you can probably knock down the price at the moment as there are so many empty properties on the rental market at the moment. Also people may well see a professional couple who want a long term let as a better prospect than students so may be more open to negotiating on price.
Good luck and hope you enjoy Cardiff.£2012 in 2012 - £13810
