If you don't need a combined wireless router / adsl modem then the best box by far is the Linksys WRT54GS. It supports open source firmware (e.g. DD-WRT) giving you extra features such as WDS and software-tunable transmitter power which gives you extra range. The product has been around for a few years in various guises and is therefore well debugged.

I've the WRT54GS for about 4 months now and I've no problem whatsoever with it. BTW, DD-WRT didn't play nice on my unit, flashed it with HyperWRT's Thibor14 (https://www.thibor.co.uk) and it has been running fine since.0

another vote for WRT range from Linksys with 3rd party firmware.
I have two WRT54GLs which have been HyperWRT-ed (Tofu) and now are Thibor-ed.
And also they're cheaper, if you can find them

dd-wrt is very cool but you have to remember to flash the mini version before you flash the standard version. If you do this then it works really well.wiraone wrote:I've the WRT54GS for about 4 months now and I've no problem whatsoever with it. I considered the Linksys, but read a couple of posts here where people had range problems? Also in my opinoin, it's so damn ugly! After a couple of recommendations from here I plumped for the NetGear WGR614 and I'm very pleased with it. Range and signal both strong.
Bought it from Go-Gadget-Go £39.99 free delivery and very prompt service."...IT'S FRUITY!"0 -
Range on WRT models with non-Linky firmware means you can boost antenna power.
Clear nvram and factory reset followed by using the reset button on the back for 10 seconds will absolutely clear the router.
You can load Thibor versions directly onto many factory-default routers. DD-WRT also goes onto many factory-fresh routers without mini version now
