Barclay Card Cancellation Process

My girlfriend rung up Barclays this morning to pay off her remaining balance & requested that her card now be cancelled. She also asked if they could send her a letter confirming that the card had been cancelled.
Barclays told her that they would not send her such a letter & she would instead get a statement showing a zero balance & she could then cut her card up if she wished.

What do you have to do get a card cancelled?
My girlfriend & I agree that the temptation for her to order another card could be too much & really want to just cancel the thing completely.

Anyone got any ideas on what we need to do?
Or had similar experiences?

Maybe its because they need a few days for the payment to clear first. Either way, they cant refuse to close it if the balance is zero. Call them up again in a day or two, and if they refuse again then write to them. But for security reasons, do NOT enclose the card - wait for them to tell you what to do with it.
  • I've had a hard time cancelling mine. I called them and asked for it to be cancelled - having a zero balance, but they haven't done. i keep getting £0 statements.

I finally wrote to them and requested the account be closed and that they send me confirmation that it has been.

Within a week I had a letter saying the account has now been closed.

It seems that writing to them is the only thing that will make them officially close the account/card.

Follow the instructions in your Barclaycard credit agreement.

    9. HOW CAN THIS AGREEMENT BE ENDED?

9.1 Either of us can end the agreement by giving written notice to the other. Unless there are exceptional circumstances, we will give you 30 days' notice before we end this agreement. You must return all cards and unused cheques to us and cancel any instructions you have given to others to charge transactions to your account. You must make all payments due and this agreement will continue until all amounts you owe have been paid including amounts added to your account after the notice to end the agreement.

Sounds easier than Lloyds TSB. I closed my account In january but they keep sending me zero balance statements and refuse to tell Experian and Equifax that my account is closed. I queried this with both CRAs 6 weeks ago and still nothing has been done. I have called Lloyds many times over the past few months and still they claim my account is closed while still refusing to update my credit records.

    Thanks for the info!
I will get my girlfriend to wait a few days before sending a letter to Barclays.
I am sure she will enjoy sending that letter off as it will be the first of her many debts to be cleared.
Although this debt is nothing to do with me, I will also be glad to see it gone!
