car insurance old claim, help please!

Hi,
a while ago an old guy drove into the back of my car which was parked in a carpark, we exchanged details and I Reported it to my insurance, they sent a assessor out to inspect the damage and take photos. After months of waiting i phoned the insurance company of the guy who hit me to see what was going on and they knew nothing about the accident (my insurance said they wrote to them numerous times and was waiting response, they said i could authorise them to repair car but would want £450 excess (expensive car to insure) as liability hadnt been admitted by third party insurance. it went on and on and every time i chased his insurance they just said were waiting for a repsonse from their customer, in the end i just paid a mate (cash price) to carry out the repairs for £350 as i wanted to change the car. Most garages were quoting £600 to repair it.
Then out of the blue i got a letter this morning from this guys insurance saying that as he hadnt replied to their numerous letters (over a 8 week period) they are now having to admit liability.
I told them that i have since sold the car and i actually paid out the repairs myself as i was sick of waiting, they have said no problem send in a copy of the bill and they will reimburse me (i have no receipt, never had one, cash price)
all i have is the pictures etc... that the assessor/my insurance have from when the car was inspected originally after the accident, cant i just ask them to offer me a cash settlement or something?

many thanks in advance for anyones advice.

They ARE offering a cash settlement, equivalent to the money you paid to have the job done. Either explain to them what you've done, or ask your friend to write you a receipt.
