Hi Folk
Your help would be very much appreciated. I have been quoted £3573.64 (vat included) for replacing existing gas boiler with a Combi boiler
We are a 3rd floor Flat (top floor) Boiler will be going in the loft. (Loft is Floored) I've pasted a copy of quote below. It was a lot more than I was expecting. What you think?
I estimate the cost of removing the existing Baxi Bermuda boiler and fire, altering the pipe works, then supplying and fitting a Glow-worm CXI30 Combi boiler in the loft, to be £3,573.64. This estimated cost includes the provisional estimated cost of £180.00 plus vat for slating works. In addition to the boiler and flue I have allowed for the following.
Assorted flushing agent and inhibitor
Assorted pipe, pipe fittings and insulation Assorted wiring for the boiler system with timer Assorted wiring for a light in the loft
Assorted condensate pipe and fittings
I Have also allowed for a plywood sheet to cover the hole in the wall left by the old boiler. I have made no allowance for removing the existing flue liner or removing the chimney terminal.

Ps we are in Aberdeen.

You haven't been quoted anything, that is an estimate!! Big difference;)
And it's one of the most badly worded estimates I've seen for a long time!
What happens when you accept the estimate and he decides he needs to add scaffold to get to a 3rd floor slate roof? It's down to you!
Get at least two more proper fixed price quotes making sure they are for the same job, (same boiler).
Good luckMine needed a new fan so that must be whats wrong with yours:D0 -
Good afternoon: Conversion from a BBU to a sealed system is labour intensive therefore impacts on cost but your RGI has estimated for a cheap boiler as well
The price given would be typical down here but not, I would guess, in Scotland. Get 3 quotes from RGIs recommended to you by a source you trust...check registration here.

Thanks for that, followed the link they are registered.
They are the folk we normally use. trying to get a few more recommended plumbers for quotes. yeah looked up the boiler, and couldn't quite account for the hike in cost, so thought I'd check in here.
How do you pin the Plumber down to a quote opposed to an estimate??
Don't mean to sound like an airhead, am expecting plumbers to say we can't account for exact cost.......
Thanks

Hi...you request a full specification, written quotation and if he won't give you one look elsewhere...some RGIs will charge a nominal fee for this and deduct the cost from the job if you decide to proceed with the quotation (tends to cut down on the time wasters tbh).

What nonsense of a 'quote'. He should not be estimating anything; he has been to see the job so unless something unforeseen is uncovered there should be no reason why a firm quote cannot be provided.
The language used is very odd, never has the word 'assorted' been used so much and so inappropriately.0 -
Do check that the loft is yours. In a lot of flats the top floor flat does not own the loft. Placing your boiler in an area you don't own could cause all sorts of issues.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I changed from a system boiler/cylinder to a Baxi - in fact they are doing it today - and the total cost was £2600 all in.
The work basically involved:
- removing the system boiiler from the kitchen
- removing the cylinder from the bathroom cupboard (upstairs)
- removing all tanks from loft
- fitting the boiler in the cupboard
- and supply and fit 3 new rads (with TRVs) in the bedroom.
not sure how that compares to your work though, but thought i'd give you an idea0
