Credit card debt in Oz

Not sure if anyone can help us but my husband and I moved from oz nearly two and a half years ago. We have always paid our debts and have cards that total to nearly eight thousand pounds. unfortunatley our circumstances have changed completely and we are unable to carry on paying although we have had a cash pay off from my husbands work which we would like to put the whole lot towards the cards which means that we would pay off just over half of what we owe. We have had these cards for eight years and have paid thousands in interest but we dont know what to do as we have contacted people here to help that wont hellp because we have debt in Oz and no one replies to us in Oz when we have emailed them. We are at our wits end as we are trying to do the right thing. We have phoned up both credit card companies but neither of them want to know which we find bizarre as surely they would want most of their money back!! Can anyone help or advise as we just dont know what to do next!

there's a lot of easier-to-recover debt that the credit card company is probably focussing on. if you can't pay, then maybe just don't pay. you will find out soon enough if they care or not. perhaps they might write off the debt as too hard to recover. but of course you'd get bad credit rating in Australia. unlikely to affect your UK credit rating, as far as I know.

write to the credit card company, and keep a copy. that way you have a record of your effort to do the right thing, just in case.
