Is there a market for used wheels ?

My O/H has just replaced steel wheels on a Landrover for alloys.
He listed them on fleabay thinking someone may be interested for off- roading and had a few watchers but no biters.
(The tyres aren't great on 3 of them but 1 is in v.good condition)
I am fed up of them cluttering up my garden and am threatening freecycle.
Before I do, does anyone know if there is a market for them ?

For me to buy them the tyres would have to be useable. You could fit winter tyres to them and swap them for the alloys at winter time to help keep your alloys looking good, and improve driveability in cold conditions.
  • Ok. In woman language please. What are winter tyres ??

Pending answer to above question and in light of what you said, would it be worth trying again on ebay with the good one and freecycle the rest ??

surely you cant get much more woman than this? winter tyres for driving in the winter.
they are usually a different compound of rubber and a different tread pattern to normal tyres. they can give a little extra grip.but also as they are fitted to steel wheels this means the nice shiney powder coated alloys you have for summer dont get damaged by the road salt.

Winter tyres are not a common habit in the UK but pretty much standard practice on the continent. The regular tyres everyone buys in the UK are "summer tyres" which degrade in performance (don't grip as well) below around 7DegC temperature. As said earlier, winter tyres are a softer rubber compound (so wear faster and so undesirabel for all year use) and a different tread which helps grip in the cold wet and even light snow.

Land Rover fans on the continent might be more interested in a set of steel wheels for winter tyre use. eBay does let you sell all round Europe, don't know how you set that up on your auction though.

As always, it depends... there are lots of possibilities for 'Land Rover steel wheel'. Some of the specialist aftermarket steel wheels will be worth more than £50 each. But the most common ones, like the ubiquitous 'white 8 spoke', will be pretty much worthless.

However I suspect you're talking about gen. parts Land Rover wheels from a Defender? In which case they probably aren't worth a whole lot, maybe £20 each in good condition with good tyres on.

The problem is that 'standard' Land Rover steel wheels tend to get swapped for alloys, as you have, so there are far more wheel sets outh there than cars that need them. Also, genuine steels are usually too narrow for fitting the sort of oversize tyres people often fit for offroad use.

There are some more interesting 'gen parts' steel wheels. If they are stamped "ANR4583 TUBELESS" or "ANR5593" they will be more attractive to LR enthusiasts so you should mention that in any advert. (These have a ring of holes around the wheel disc, and are known as 'Wolf' rims - they are stronger and are used on the current generation military LRs)

The next time you see a Land Rover parked up with 'club' stickers on it, just put a note on it asking if they know anyone interested.

what tyres are on them at the minute? if they are chunky mud tyres then sell them as ideal for weekend mud plugging - someone in my land rover club got 60 quid for a set of steels with mud tyres on them, even though they had barely any tread left.
if they are road tyres, they can still be worth a bit. someone else in my land rover club listed a set on ebay with massive "genuine land rover wheels" hype and some mug paid 50 quid for the set because of all the "genuine" nonsense. try this and see if it works

If you'd ever seen the beading lip break off an aftermarket Land Rover alloy (gentle offroading) or the middle tear out of the centre of a weller 8 spoke (racing off road), you might not think the "genuine" bit was nonsense in this particular case. Some things are overbuilt with good reason.
