Can we claim PPI back?? HELP!

Hey,

My partner took out a loan in 2007 with Natwest...he was (and still is) self-employed...people have told me that PPI does not cover self-emplyed people.

I have called natwest and they told me to look through my paperwork, however i can't find any mention of this issue.

Any help would be great please as we if we can claim we are owed around £2000.

Thanks in advance!

    Hi Helen

Not sure if you will come across the PPI information on the Natwest website, but sometimes they enclose the details of the PPI and the eligibility.

Despite that check this link here for more info:

You will find a checklist of mis selling reasons and template letters, if any on the checklist applies to your other half, as well as the reasons you have already mentioned, then write to them with help from the templates, they have 8 weeks to respond in full.

Post by recorded delivery, as this would be your proof of posting.

Another letter maybe required, if they do not resolve in your O/H's favour, and they do normally give you the opportunity to write to them again, keep on at them until a final decision is received, where they should give details of the Financial ombudsman service (FOS), if your not satisfied with the outcome of the complaint.

Good luck with this and ask for help when required, and keep us posted.
    Cheers.;)

Some PPI plans don't cover the self employed but many do.

  • I think he needs the checklist for the PPI which is where the person who sold you the PPI should have gone through the exclusions and what is covered.
I have not worked for NatWest Bank since February 2009

Could you tell me a little more about this? My partner said he didnt really know what he was signing up for and cant remember anything about a checklist. He says he was pressurised and got the impression it was a compulsory part of the loan.

The cost of the PPI is £2,500 (we have now cancelled it which wiped £1000 of the loan but i am hoping to claim back the other £1,500 he has already paid).

The T&C don't mention anything about being self-emplyed....the only relevance is a term stating: "PPI: I confirm i am in paid employment of at least 16 hours a week". He has signed this but as he is self employed therefore work isnt guarenteed everyweek (he is a sub-contractor). For example he worked 60 hours last week but has nothing this week, not even an hours work!

Could someone advise me if this sounds like a missold PPI?? Thanks all

    Hi Helen

If this was pressurised on your other half, I would say this was a reason for being mis sold and if he is not eligible to make a claim then the same there.
    Give it a go.;)
They may even send back the information on the first response you have from them, they normally do, but for your reasons so far, personally I think your other half has a case here.

Sometimes it can mention if you are paying NI contributions? Can you not ring them up and ask them if you are covered if its like what you say whereby he works one week and off the next. I assume they mean that if you are working under 16 hours then you would be able to sometimes claim benefits as well and often this is where they say "you are not eligible". If he had no work for a number of weeks then he would be able to claim unemployment or income support so this is perhaps how they look at it. ANother thing it can say is if the business ceases which although only a contractor then if you sign on the dole this is then classed as the business ceasing maybe.

You firstly need to find out if he is eligible to claim on it and take it from there. If you go ahead and claim misselling and its your only reason then it could be that you are eligible to claim on it.
