single person daily electric usage is this too high?

  • Sounds highly likely that the security lights are connected to your meter.

Especially if there isn't a separate meter for them - have you checked this?

I think you need to talk to your landlord......

Is there any other power used for communal purposes? Emergency lighting in the entry hall or any other security devices? That could explain the rest.

guys I have had over £800 written off.

Threatened legal action after this dragged on into september, on the september bill they had the meter change but nothing was changed on the balance. It also had a massively over estimated usage for june to september I assume because of the huge reading from the start of the year. I gave them the correct september reading and after a long discussion a manager approved a new bill which was calculated based on my average usage for the 3 years prior to dec 2008 and the june 2009 to sept 2009 usage, which was 9 units a day.

So the moral of the story is persist. There is hope if anyone else is been given the run around treatment by these companies.

I still never got round to sorting out the security light but am looking into estimating what it is using and then will consider contacting my landlord about it.

9 units a day at 10p a unit puts my quarterly bill at around £81.

yeah is great news, this experience has learnt me a few things tho, the main one been to check my meter on a regular basis.

I think the security light was connected but now is disconnected from my supply, I posted earlier I was using 12 units a day, but now I am using 9 units a day and was using 9 units a day for the 3 years before this event.

My pc is back on and am back to my old pattern except my electric water is used more sparingly and my kettle is never filled right up anymore, I fill it now typically half full at the most.

I currently owe atlantic now (on the sept bill) I believe around £250, I paid £120 via direct debits since the june bill so this would equate to the new bill for the 9 month period been around £370 from dec 2008 to sept 2009.

Also one thing I forgot to mention, it turns out dec 2008 was an estimated reading, the last real reading before then was sept 2008. There is a label in the meter area showing a meter change in late sept 2008 which is what we agreed on when it probably got changed.

Glad you are getting a free meter check at last - Though one thing strikes me. In your first post on this you said that the £750 debt had built up because "I was on the wrong meter (diff flat)" From this I assume that Atlantic were recording your use and billing you for another flat's meter, but as the only other meters are pre-pay, where is the meter from which they took the readings? Also, £750 is a lot of money for electricity when you have gas central heating, so this bill must have built up over a considerable time - Now whilst it's only fair that you pay for what you used, it's Atlantics faulty meter readings that have built up the debt and you should be allowed the same amount of time over which the debt built up, to pay it off.
    Good Luck

The first post wasnt completely accurate due to not having the full bill details at hand when I posted it.

I think you misunderstood me in that when I was using the other meter, there was 2 credit meters, this changed it seems near the end of september 2008. Since then I had a normal bill but estimated (so meter issue was not discovered), then for some reason I had no bill in march (so it remained undiscovered), then in june a new actual reading was taken but from the other meter I was not reading from before.

I hope this clears up your confusion.
