The 5 stores have been sold to New Look

Oxford St does not need another New Look. I love browsing in the big Borders there esp late evenings before a night out in the West End but I can't believe that the stock wouldn't be recirculated to other stores such as the Charing Cross Rd branch. I shall go and pay a final visit tomorow after work.

Thats such sad news! When I was at Uni, Boraders was like a lifeline to me- I used to buy a coffee and take my books into Starbucks to study and write my thesis. I would be able to grab references if I needed to from books around, and spent way too much of my student loan in that store! I was not able to go home to study, now Boarders is closing, I hope other Uni students do have decent places to go to study. Such a shame!

I think more New Looks are a bad thing, and I cannot see how they are needed. Especially in Oxofrd Street- the entire road is made up of about 80% clothes!- And I am a fashion addict saying this- we do not need another clothes store!!
  • I guess the fact that many of us were going in to browse and not buy is the main problem........a victim of their own success
  • I shall miss the Swindon one :(

Borders certainly isn't the cheapest place to buy books, but I like the spacious store and layout, the staff are very friendly too. I could happily spend hours browsing around in there!

I don't think the area needs a New Look, there's already a big one in the town centre, and there's generally more variety there.

I really hope they change their mind about Llantrisant.
I use them quite allot and *hate* going into Cardiff (Its my next nearest store).
I'm going to email the HQ and ask if there's any chance of them remaining open.

Me too, when I visit the relatives and I get my travel coffee from there for the journey home. Not good. :(

I haven't bought very many books from there, but they carry a huge selection of magazines which my OH & I love to browse through/buy on a regular basis.

I love the smell of coffee & new books in there too!:o

My dd loves to wonder around looking at the books & games....we shall all miss it.:(

We don't want or need another New Look!

Shame - quite often use this store. Love how they stock a lot of the type of books not stocked by other places. My friends and I use the gay and lesbian and pagan sections often and they also stock good stores of manga and foreign books.:cry::cry:

THye also stock a fabulous array of magazines and I get a lot of titles from otehr countries that nobody else stocks.

You are right tho _ Oxford Street does not need another cheap and nasty clothes shop. They already have massive Primarks and New Looks for those who dont mind workers being exploited for cheap fashion that is tacky and falls apart.

I like borders. I do think books can be a little bit too pricey though. I guess thats mostly down to publishers also?

No, it is not the fault of the publishers. It is the fault of the free-market fundamentalists (led by a bookshop, Dillons, (hoist by their own by 1995)) who abolished the Net Book Agreement. The NBA was destroyed and made illegal over the 1990s.

We now have the unrestricted freedom to pay only £2.49 for the latest Big Brother contestant's auto(sic)biography and the freedom to have to pay £12.99 for a paperback edition of Flannery O'Connor. Isn't the free market wonderful? Clearly much better than a nasty, paternalistic, cross-subsidising commie state where both would be available for £4.95.
