Council Tax Problem

Hello,

Just wanted to know how council tax is worked out.

ive got a house which has 3 professionals and 1 student. As far as i am aware the 3 professionals would have to pay the tax but would that mean they would get 25% off since that there is a student living too?

has to be a full time student and has to provide proof of ths to the council tax dept. also the ctax has to be in all the names of the persons living there otherwise the named person/people are responsible.

students must be over 18 (double check this bit)

My brother works and lives in a house with two students. My brother has to pay 75% council tax as the students are disregarded, so he is treated as a single person.

If there are 3 professionals in the house, they would not qualify for a 25% discount. It would only apply if the situation was reversed and there was one professional and 3 students.

  • Never heard of this before .... can we qualify for a discount, me, hubbie and son living in our house, son over 18 and in f/t education - does anyone know if we would quailfy for the discount?

Nope, sorry. You and hubby are both "qualifying adults" so full council would be due.

If only one person lives in a property they will get a 25% discount on the council tax bill. When working out how many people live in a property, some people are not counted. These are called disregarded people. If everyone who lives in the property is disregarded, there will still be a council tax bill, but there will be a 50% discount.

    Disregarded people are:
    aged 17 or under
living in the property temporarily and who have their home somewhere else
    prisoners
in detention prior to deportation or under mental health legislation
defined as a severely mentally impaired person
full-time students on a qualifying course of education
a spouse or a dependant of a student and a non British Citizen who is not allowed under immigration rules, either to work in the UK or claim benefit
    Student nurses/Project 2000 student nurses
young people on government training schemes, apprentices, or foreign language assistants
hospital patients who live in hospital
living in a residential care home, nursing home, or mental nursing home where they receive care or treatment
living in a hostel which provides care or treatment because of a person’s old age, physical or mental disability, past or present alcohol or drug dependence or past or present mental illness and in England a bail or probation hostel
    carers
    care workers
staying in a hostel or night shelter, for example, in a Salvation Army or Church Army hostel
school or college leavers still aged under 20 who have left school or college after 30 April. They will be disregarded until 1 November of the same year whether or not they take up employment
aged 18 and someone is entitled to child benefit for them. This includes a school or college leaver in remunerative work, or a person in local authority care
    members of a religious community
members of visiting armed forces and their dependants

slightly misleading - if a property is occupied by students only, the students are n ot disregarded ... they are EXEMPT i.e no charge.

council tax is based on 2 adults in a property so if there's 2 or 20 adults, full charge is payable
  • On what basis do they rent the house. If it is a house in 'Multiple Occupation' i.e. - they all have their own room with a lockable door but share kitchen, bathroom etc, then the Landlord has to pay under certain conditions. If one of them left, are the tenants responsible for replacing the person or does the Landlord. Is it a shared Tenancy or do they all have their own individual tenancies. I would query this situation with the Council.
With regard to the discount, the student is Exempt but as there are 2 or more other residents, they have to pay the full amount.

My sister is a care worker, her husband is a qualifying adult. they have two children age 7 and 5. Would they qualify for any discount on their council tax bill?

No. Sorry. To be disregarded as a carer, you have to live with the person you are providing care for (35+ hours per week) and the person you are caring for cannot be your spouse, partner or child.
