Busy hard drive

Although I have disabled indexing, every so often my hard drive is busy, so much it freezes what else I am doing. Ideas please?

A few suggestions.
Not enough memory, the hard drive needs defragging, virus checker working in the background.0 -
Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and from Task Manager select Processes.
Order by clicking on Memory Usage, this will show what is using up all your resources.0 -
If you're running Vista, I believe it defragments when the machine is idle, or has low usage.
Might be best to let it get on with it for one night.Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.0 -

1. What Operating system, windows xp, me, vista, seven, 98, 95,
2. How much memory
3. How many processes running < CTRL + ALT + DEL bottom left corner processes:
also look for weird process names.
4. What antivirus
5. What antispyware.
FIXES,
1. download malwarebytes antispyware, install, update and run a quick scan, remove any spyware found. reboot. https://www.malwarebytes.org <this is freeware.
2. download hijackthis 2.02, create a log file and upload here.
3. CCleaner slim version http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds Slim version does not contain yahoo toolbar.
4. http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm read gives you an idea of what services can be turned to manual instead of automatic.0
