Beachbeth, Pattycake is so right. My dd graduated from Kings College and the ceremony was long, and tbh quite boring, no singing, no music (not that I can remember) and we just sat there with all the parents and applauded, and applauded as the endless stream of graduates came out on to the stage. Quite a lot of the parents seemed quite overcome and waved tissues about while their kids looked sheepish! Oh, I often find social situations quite difficult but on that day it was all about her.:j And it was brilliant!0

i work quite near a uni and have seen mums coming and going from about ten graduation ceremonies in the last week so I have good experience of this (in watching anyway
)
The outfits I liked were smart linen suit combos, maybe nice summer dresses (you know the nice M&S ones from per una) or even regular suits. Some mums wore silk dresses which I was less enthusiastic about - if they're dead expensive they look great but if they're cheaper they just look cheapBut there really was a huge range and as long as it was sort of smart everyone looked fine
Be wary about high heels, I know the unis around us have outdoor garden party type events afterwards and it is easy to come a cropper walking around in stilettos on the grass
Don't worry about being overcome, you won't be the only one. But also don't be afraid to step out for a minute or do whatever makes you comfortable. Personally I always sit somewhere that I can slip out, partly because my threshold for falling asleep is low
Enjoy it and congrats!
Oh and PS the graduates looked so knockout that I have to say the mums probably weren't really being noticed at all. I say as someone definitely of mum ageso don't worry, you'll blend into the background in any case

My sister graduated at Lancaster uni last year, i wore a black (trouser) suite with formal shoes and a pretty camisole.
My mum wore a shift dress and a lovely cardigan with a brooch. Mum's 5ft and i'm 5ft 2 and both wore heels, but our feet were aching beacause of all the walking round the campus, it also rained so take a brolly.
enjoy your day and be proud!!
SharronSometimes your the dog, and sometimes your the lampost..:p0 -
I wore a linen suit with a summery top for my son's graduation 2 years ago next week, it was a lovely warm day. I was just thinking about it yesterday when I tried said suit on and it fits me again. I am 5 foot nothing too but lowish comfy shoes are my chosen footwear if I have to walk about.0

My daughter is having her graduation ceremony on Thursday and I haven't a clue what people wear. Im not a clothes person and hate clothes shopping and because Im only five foot tall I have difficulty finding things to fit anyway.
Do I go for the sort of thing you would wear to a wedding? I haven't a clue and am really dreading it because I don't like public occasions and avoid them like the plague. Of course, I have to go because its my daughter's big occasion but I can't wait until its over.
Use google and click on images search button after typing in "2008 Graduation Birmingham parents" or any appropriate uni, likewise for facebook or local paper - to see sample parents.... to be honest anything goes...

Which Uni is the graduation at and as a man I wore a suit and the ex wife wore trousers, blouse casual jacket, be smart but be comfortable as you may do a lot of walking around on campus, good to get their early especially if the grounds are nice for the photo opportunity with the daughter.
My son graduated last year from Surrey and we/I took loads of photos in the grounds. Lovely day, enjoy it as it must have cost you a fortune lol0 -
When my dd graduated last year I wore a linen skirt, camisole top, short sleeved cardy and medium heels. It is so true to wear something comfy and that you feel will look good in the photos. It is a lovely day and goes so quickly.0

Treat yourself to a nice summer dress in the sales, and team this up with a matching pashmina-like shawl (a chep version will do) in case it gets cooler, then just chill out and enjoy the day in the knowledge that you are not on show but nor are you showing up the young graduate. Avoid jackets unless you really do want to look like the mother of the bride!Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

I know this is a bit late, but at DS1's graduation there were some astonishing hats - and I don't mean that in a good sense! :rotfl:
HE looked so smart all togged up that he walked straight past Grandad without being recognised. :rotfl:Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
My graduation was 2 years ago last week. I wore killer heels and ended up taking them off and wandering about in bare feet, much to my mother's disgust. Comfortable shoes is my number 1 tip!!0
