Ford Mondeo V6 Spark Plug Changing

Hi all, me again :o

I am looking at changing the sparking plugs and leads on my Ford Mondeo 2.5 V6.
I rang Ford and they have quoted me £270 + VAT:eek::eek:

So, looked at the NGK platium spark plugs and some leads which I can get the lot for £70 max, however been told by Ford reason that it costs so much is because the set of plugs on the back on the engine are swines to get out and can snap off if not careful and really, they said they would rather not do it but as it's a Ford car have too.

I want to try doing it myself but going to have to take off all the top engine manifold and get a special spanner to remove the plugs.

Any advice on this one, they don't need changing as the car is driving fine and there is no mis fire but want to get it done before winter and hasn't been done for at least two years now.

The top manifold needs to be removed, a much more harder job than your normal car

i can only offer you sympathy and good luck.
i remember a while ago my company maintained some machines with v6's shoe horned into the engine bay, 3 out of the 6 plugs were accessible, the other 3 were impossible with the engine in situ, the only time they were ever changed was when the engine had to come out for other repairs, time was never given to change these plugs on a routine service.
some folk might advise spraying wd40 around plug threads and leaving over night to soak in.
make sure you put half decent plugs in that will last a while.

Surely changing spark plugs is part of the service schedule, and would be carried when the car was in for service?

No, not carried out on a service this car.

I know that the top mainfold needs to come off, but I know that this will take half a day at least.
I know that the manifold seals might need changing after removing the manifold, so I'm told.
I may ring around see how much labour some where else will charge if I supply the parts, think this being done on a drive might be a little hard

You may be better off joining MEG, I found it invaluable when I had a mondeo

    Thank's Chris.
Will take a look, I have the car manual, will see maybe taking the manifold off see what I find otherwise been quoted £120 + VAT labour to have it done which sounds quite good considering its a 3-4 hour job :D

From what I could see regarding plug replacement, the trickiest bit is having enough tools to do the job, e.g modified socket extensions

I've lost count of the amount of times I have had to buy a particular tool just to conduct a single job, never to be used again.

My worry is the back plugs, getting them out
I know what you are saying, I have done that afew times but been lucky on others times to borrow the tool
  • hi i have just read ur comment i have a s reg v6 mondeo and i service myself to do spark plugs all i do is undo the coil pack to gain access to the rear plugs i have never removed the inlet manifold and the front plugs just remove plastic cover then unbolt the box that sits over plug area also no special tools are needed just a standard socket set with small plug socket in normally takes me about 30 mins to do plugs just the rest of service takes time as oil filter isnt the easiest to take out

hope this is of some help as i refuse to pay garage prices
