Split ring removal

Can anyone advise the best way to remove a split ring without split ring pliers.

I need to repair a door handle as the spring has gone but I need to remove the split ring first.

You mean circlip.....?
Sometimes they will prise off with a screwdriver, but watch it doesnt spring off and go missing

The hard part is putting it back on. A pair of pliers sometimes works, line it up with the grove, then use the plier to squeeze it over.

Its easy to distort them without the proper tools, rendering the clip useless.
